It is called "denying yourself." Push yourself to do things that would normally be uncomfortable. You will be amazed at how far you can push your body and mind. Remember take baby steps as you go. Don't try to go from one extreme to another. For example, if you whine about a scratch...see if you can go without saying anything to anyone.

I would argue that the answer to the first question is yes. I noticed that when I'm physically active my mental faculties are generally sharper. However, I would argue the answer to the second question is no or at the very least not all the time. I'll tell you the last thing I want to do after a long grueling day of work and grad school is work out. If my mind is on overload I tend to feel run down and am generally not in the mood to be physically active.

What might help is getting a a job where you have to deal with conflict all day long. That worked for me.
Try IRS or TSA, the two most hated government agencies. Especially TSA - you can listen to everybody complain and moan about how inconvenient everything is... waaah.
It'll definately toughen you up after a couple months.

Sometimes it's a subtle ' one up.' Some people have an easy grace where others have a tough time just dealing with conventional interpersonal exchanges.
Just be yourself. Toughening your mind? Only way to do that is to steep yourelf in absolute truth. That only comes from one place. If your friends don't like you now .....

To answer the question, take on some challenges. Commit to running a marathon or something else that takes a lot of dedication and commitment.
It's not hard to be femine and tough at the same time. Toughness is an attitude, not a physical trait.

Martial arts are a great way to strengthen both mind and body.It did wonders for me in learning to control my temper, but it raises the self esteem to a level where you can think 'Hey, I don't have to let this bother me.I can put my toes on my 6 foot tall instructors chin!'.Btw, tae kwon do is great for the abs and butt. And if you watch the way alot of martial artists move, there's a kind of gracefulness in their everyday movements. So just because you can break a board at shoulder level with one kick doesn't meant you'll be strutting around with a butch swagger.

Experience is what you're needing. Like for instance, if you see someone get shot and killed, the next time you'd see it happen, would be less traumatic, due to the previous experience. Learn from mistakes and be willing to make mistakes.

Actually, just stand up for yourself! Like when someone mess with, try to beat the crap out of them! When someone tries to make you do something you don't want to do, just say it! I'm a direct person and yet a tomboy. ;)

Find yourself a rolemodel who has the qualities that you want to work on (but hasn't sacrificed her femininity), and interview her about how she got that way.
