729.
For cubic measure, you have to go length x width x height. There's 3 feet in a yard, so 3 yards is 9 feet. Length x width (or 9 x 9) is 81. Then take that and multiply it times the height, which is another 9 feet. 81 x 9 = 729 cubic feet.

I like to use pictures to help:
Imagine a rectangular box that is 1 yard long, 1 yard wide, and 3 yards tall OR, three square boxes that are each 1 yard long, 1 yard wide and 1 yard tall.
Each of these THREE square boxes would then be 3 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 3 feet tall, so each box would be 3ft X 3ft X 3ft or 27 cubic feet. Since there are THREE of these boxes, you multiply 27 cubic feet by 3 boxes and get 81 cubic feet.
Which is another, more visual way of saying:
3 cubic yards X 27 cubic feet per cubic yard = 81 cubic feet

You know that volume of a cube is length x height x width or lhw and since it's a cube, all the sides are the same. So, volume = length to the 3rd power. We also know that there are three feet in every yard, so to convert the yards to feet we have to multiply EACH side by 3.
(3(length))to the 3rd = volume
By the power of a product rule, you would cube the three to get 27. So, for every cubic yard there are 27 cubic feet. 27, not 3, is your conversion factor. By this conversion, there are 81 cubic feet in 3 cubic yards.

well... there are 3 ft in a yard so width x height x length meaning 3 x 3 x 3 so 27 cubic feet ( 3 x 3 is 9 x 3 is 27)

Think of three rubics cube. How many blocks are there?
There are 9 on the bottom, 9 in the middle, and 9 on the top of each cube. So 27 blocks times 3 cubes is 81.
