For beginners, start with a Western saddle. They are more stable. The western saddle has the horn in front. The horn is for hanging the lasso on, not for holding on to. But many beginners use the horn as a handle -- makes them feel more secure.

Tell the stable you are a novice rider. They will give you a gentle mare to ride. You may need a stool to get your foot in the stirrup. Stand to the left of the horse's face. Left hand on saddle horn. Left foot in left stirrup, swing right leg over the saddle and place right foot in right stirrup.

Now, take both reins in left hand. Hold saddle horn in right hand if you want. Gently squeeze horses body with your thighs. You won't be wearing spurs!

You will most likely have a trail guide. When his horse moves, yours will follow. If she doesn't, gently snap both reins in a down motion. A horse moves side to side so expect some motion. Do not tense up or grip too tightly. Relax in the saddle.

Hold reins down & loosely to let the horse have her head (go). To turn horse, move reins out from your body in the direction you want her to go and gently tug (snap) the reins. To stop, pull both reins back towards your body in a smooth gentle motion.

If the stable gives you a good riding horse, she will know what to do with little help from you.

One thing to remember, horses may lose their footing. Do NOT panic. She won't go down, just may skid a bit. Hold with your thighs. Keep feet in stirrups. Heels in down position.

Have fun!

DEPENDS _

Western riding, neck reining - lay the rein on the left side of the neck (don't pull back) and the horse should turn right, away from the rein pressure.

Same goes for turning left - lay the right rein against his neck.

English or a non-neckrein trained horse - just pull the rein on the side you wantt o turn - but make sure the other rein is loose enough so the horse's head CAN turn.

Stopping - pull gently on both reins. Loosen up (move your hands forward a bit) when you want to go.

Yes I do. Ive bin riding for 4 yrs. U slight;y squeeze reins 2 make stop and let off the pressure when wanting to go. When stopping, exhale, and squezze the reins 2 put light pressure. When wanting to go, inhale and as my instructor says open the door 4 yer horse to go (let go of the pressure but not the reins) squeeze legs when wanting 2 go faster. take yer hand (with reins gripped in side) and take it out to the left er right (which evr way yer turning) and u may need to kiss (make noise with mouth) or squeeze legs to make horse not stop when turning. hold the reins in yer hand according to the horses shoulders. email me 4 mor info! :) good luck!

Where are you going to go horseback riding? Most places have the horses well-trained on a particular trail and you don't need to do anything. They might even have a guide go with you. In any case, let them know that you're a first-timer and they'll make sure to give you a horse that's gentle and knows where to go.

i havent read much yet of the other peoples comments but you never know every horse person has diffrent ways of teaching you could go to one barn and they could be doing a way of teaching and you could go to another place and they would say. heels down toes out lean forward etc. but you cant always expect what they are going to do it also depends on what kind of bit they are using . if its long the horse may have a hard mouth ( it may be hard to control) almost all barns have 1 or all things that are diffrent and you maynot expect what will happen or how they do things.
good luck and have fun!

Find a good instructor and take a half dozen lessons. Work on balance so you don't clutch the reins too much and hang on the horse's mouth. Practice.
