oh no....I had a perm and my hair was fried...the only way to fix it was to cut it...I hope this isn't true in your case.
Personally, I use this- http://www.drugstore.com/qxp72884_332828_sespider/biosilk/silk_therapy_treatment.htm
It does a really good job, and I've been using it for years since my hair was initially fried. Good luck!

Is that the only time you have use a flat iron on it? If so then it isn't the flat iron, Your hair had to be burnt before or it could be just dry. Try a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, and a treatment for moisture. My favorit and everyone probobly knows this by now is Biologe Hydrating shampoo with Biologe conditioning balm. It is a conditioner and treatment in one and you won't believe the difference you will see in your hair. You can find it either in salons or beauty supply house. It is true that after frequent use of flat irons without putting a heat protectant on your hair first will cause damage, and sometimes even if you do use heat protecter it will still cause damage, but not after just one time. That kind of damage can only be remedie one way cut it off. So unless your due a haircut then try the Biologe first.

Straightening your hair every day WILL damage your hair, just like if you blow dry your hair alot. I would recommend straightening it maybe every other day (or even every 3rd day) and depending on the level of damage you have done to your hair, you might need to deep condition it everyday and do some hot oil treatments. Theres some stuff I use called Hairlox Cholesterol that has made my hair feel better (I dye and bleach my hair alot). I tried to find a picture of it but only found similar products. I'm sure theyll work the same so I'll submit the link.

Depending on how much is "Fried", you may need to cut it. Aphogee makes an excellent treatment that you have to use with a dryer. It has to dry in your hair and it gets very hard. It also stinks and because you cannot cover your hair while drying it drips and is sticky. It will help the condition of your hair a lot. Do not go back to that hair dresser.

I always use a flat iron and my hair does sometimes look fried. What I do is use a anti-frizz and shine product. Bed head as a good one, or frizz-ease. You can put them on before using heat on your hair and they look nice.

Well the effects of a flat iron are usually temporary, I would be suprised if it permanently damaged your hair. In any case a deep conditioning treatment is in order...and I would definatly contact that sytlist to give her a piece of your mind!

Wella is one of the leading products used by hair professionals. You can get their products at beauty supply stores. Like Sally's. They are very decent priced too.
Here's a link to many of their hair products:

This is one which will probably help very well with the damage and get it back to strength:

You need to seal the hair shaft, to give it the appearance of health. Try to find products like biosilk, or redken (antisnap, glass, etc.) to help with this.
