You don't have to have them cut, some people prefer the look of them with out the long tail and ears.

You don't have to. It's done for "appearance" sake. Unfortunately, people don't consider the pain the poor animals experience. Not ALL Dobies are mean. Mine weren't. If you are considering having this done, check out the work of other Dobermans' the doctor (YES, use a VET, not some guy that claims to know how) has done. We went to a doctor and looked at the botched jobs he had done on other dogs before we had our dog's ears done. When I saw the horrible maimed way the ears were cut, I refused to have my Dobie done. However, my husband had his done, but he went to a good VET, who gave us pain medication and everything. A botched job can't be corrected, and can also result in loss of hearing for the dog. Check out your veterinarian. See if the dogs will be kept over night, check out how they block the ears, and make sure it's a clean safe environment. Not all Vets are qualified to be vets....they are lazy and do poor work. My Dobie was a sweetheart, and allowed my daughter to climb on him, and he loved us. He was protective, but never harmed anyone, and NEVER made any indication that he would bite anyone. Dobermans are highly intelligent, and if you get one as a puppy, have it professionally trained to obey commands (the owner needs to learn HOW to command, too), and house train the dog, they will be life partners worth having. Dobies became vicitms of this abuse of cropping and docking when they were first bred. I can't remember the Dr.'s name, but he decided a Dobie would look great if only he could get the ears pointed like a German Shepherd and the tail docked, so he started doing it and entering him in shows. The dog, being so beautiful, took first prize, and that set the standard. What a shame.

Dobermans have long tail and long ears. Those dogs are helpful to the hunters. So while hunting those parts can come in their own way or can be harmed by the prey.

I quit breeding this wonderful breed because I was sickened of mutilating these precious puppies. Instead of delight when litters were due, I was filled with the dread of having to mutilate them.

One little girl was the best ever. I just knew that she could go all the way..I had her ears cropped in a show crop (taller than a pet crop) and she was so traumatized by the whole procedure and after care that she became fearful and then vicious. I had to have her put to sleep before she was 2 years old.
That was the end of my enjoyment of breeding Dobies.

They are beautiful naturally. Take a look at these natural Dobermans from the UK.>>http://images.google.com/images?hs=PpL&hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official_s&q=doberman%20UK&btnG=Search&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

you don't have to, in fact I wouldn't. It's just for show. My mother had a boxer and she got his tail and ears cliped and honestly I felt so bad for the poor little guy. No matter what anyone tells you, it hurts them. And there's a long healing process which you have to really take excellent care of the bandages and such so they don't get infected. I say if they were meant to look that way they'd be born with ears that stand and stubby little tails. It's best to just leave them be in my opinion.

you don't HAVE to cut ears and tails. in fact, most vets have stopped cutting ears all together due to the fact that it is a painful and un-neccesary process for the dog. tails are done when the puppies are young enough that they don't even remember having it done. either way they're both a personal preference thing.

No no no.....you do not HAVE to crop their ears and dock their tails unless you are going to show your dog. Cropping and docking conforms to the breed's standards. I, personally, will never crop or dock a dog. Its cruel and inhumane! There is actually a law that might make it illegal. If you want to show a dog, pick a breed that is allowed to stay natural. I just dont see how there are "breed standards" that require cutting off parts they were naturally born with! How can people say thats how their supposed to be? If it was, they would be born cropped and docked.

I believe it was started to make it easier for the dogs to fight. Nowadays it must be considered fashionable. I've also seen Rottweiller tails cropped and ears set, but I'd never do it to mine. He's very handsome just the way he is :)

tail is mixed between their legs and it is long enough to be like a viper.ears is easier to be cleaned and it is difficult for other dogs in a fight to bit their ears.both also cut for aggressive appearance

It's done for show...You dont have to dock the tails and clip the ears if you dont want to.
