Crying releases the emotions. The pain takes energy to deal with and not letting it out takes energy too. Not crying is an incredible drain on your psychological energy. Crying takes relaxing and releasing pressure to keep it together. Crying allows you to experience the pain so it loses its strength.

Pain persists because people don't want to experience it. They don't know that experiencing it is what releases it and lets it go.

The endorphins mentioned above happen too, and that is helpful.
After crying you have much more energy to heal yourself and get back to better feelings.

Crying or weeping: The third category, generally referred to as crying or weeping, is increased lacrimation due to strong emotional stress or physical pain. This practice is not restricted to negative emotions; many people have been known to cry when extremely happy. In humans, emotional tears can be accompanied by reddening of the face and sobbing — cough-like, convulsive breathing, sometimes involving spasms of the whole upper body. Tears brought about by emotions have a different chemical make up than those for lubrication

That's a good question. All I know is that when I cry, it's kind of like I finally have been able to release a little bit of the emotions kept inside. My crying reflects my inner emotions. Sometimes that's the only way we know to deal with the emotion. Cry. We cry when we're happy and sad. It's just an outward effect to an inner emotion.
