Cariño, is like "Dear". In common language it's like Darling or Honey.

But in that context is like saying
honey,

te quiero mucho - i love you so much.

If he says "cariño" alone, without any other words in the sentence, it's a term of endearment. It would be the equivalent of a word like "sweetheart".
