To protect your toes?

We have toenails to protect the skin inside of the toenail! It protects us from infections, toe fungus (in some ways, unless you're just not caring for your feet) , and harming of or puncturing the skin inside of the toenail!

To hold the toenail polish.

Kidding, I don't know either, but it is probably to protect our toes.

they're supposed to be a defense mechanism, though due to our evolution they don't do much in the way of ripping into someone elses flesh...we're lucky if it can draw some blood in the person before they snap backwards. but they do provide mild protection to the finger tips.
