Usually you want to not wash it for a day. It's really up to you depending on how much you want the dye to take or not. The more dirty your hair is, the more it will soak up the dye. Washing it strips out your hair's natural nutrients and also applies waxy contents found in shampoo and conditioner which makes the dye harder to hold to the hair. It will still pick up, but not as dark as if you let it be dirty for a day. If you want it to look like the box, don't wash it. If you want it to be slightly lighter, wash it.

My stylist always tells me not to wash my hair the day before I come in, that way the cuticle is not flat and smooth like it would be after washing, and it is easier to apply color that way.

if your hair is healthy it makes no difference. Hair color is an acid/base reaction and water in no way interferes with the chemical process or dilute the color.
If your hair is previously colored , do it on wet hair because chemically treated hair is porous and can grab the color in and uneven fashion. Water evens out the hairs porosity allowing even color.

My experience is that it works better if you wait a day after washing your hair. My fave is Nutrisse Garnier, brown sugar.

It's best to always read the directions on the box before coloring your hair.
