If one day, say people invent a time machine and are able to go back and see that all religious things are false, and offered that as an undeniable truth to everyone. Ie. All people knew the truth after that. What would happen? Would former religious/spiritual people get very depressed? Would people tease them as in "I told you so?" Would people found new religions based on science and/or aliens? Would people still believe there was a god out there, even if there was no proof? Would society be in chaos since there was no "eye in the sky" watching? Would many laws based on religion be all wiped out? Would this be a good thing? Let me know what you think the world would be like.

Note: Please do not look at this as a slap in the face of religion, this is just a what-if scenario. Please do not send hateful and angry answers, just move on if you don't like the question. And please also do not respond with stuff like "God exists so this would never happen." It's just hypothetical.

I think it could be a positive thing for humankind in the long run. We could open up and honest dialog about personal freedom vs. responsibilty. For instance, I think sex is a normal and wonderful part of the human condition. Not a sin. There however should be meaningful conversation about sexual responsibilty that many religions shut down by just saying sex outside marriage without the risk of procreation is wrong, period, end of discussion. Religion makes too many people so judgemental and hateful. People would no longer be seperated by disagreements over whose God was more real. It would also remove some ridiculous things that I think harm society; like sex is sinful, people shouldn't use birth control, discrimination against gay people, oppression of minorities and women, etc...

On the other hand I do know some people for whom religion is a positive thing and they don't run around trying to control others or convert them. They seem truly happy and content to just live in their faith. I wouldn't feel good if they felt pain or loss because religion was suddenly disproved once and for all. There is no doubt some people will continue to believe no matter what proof to the contrary exists and some people would become depressed if you took religion away from them. Society would not collapse though as many religious people believe, I think it would improve. No one wants to live or raise their kids to live in a choatic, lawless world. I read this somewhere and I thought it made a good point as well; "One newspaper headline you will never see: ATHIESTS SLAUGHTER AGNOSTICS"

I think that people would found new religion based on science and aliens (i mean, they would found MORE, since there is already some.). I think that some devoutly religious people would become severly depressed because everything they had believed in was a lie, etc etc. It would not be a good time. I would like to think that IF that happened everybody would be like "oh ok, so it ISNT a sin to be gay," or whatever and people would move on and it would be a loving place yada yada yada....sadly I doubt that would happen. Christians would probably say that it was a hoax - much like Athiests say to Christians today. The world would flip upside down.

Science is based on cause and effect, thus can not go on for ever. If you believe matter to be eternal, then you must also believe that it is perfect, b/c nothing perfect is not eternal. If it is perfect and eternal, then it would not require change as it does. If it was perfect @ one point, how did it come to a decision to change matter having no intelligence? A Higher Being is required into the equation for existence to work. If you want to go by probability of the perfection of the intellect of man, you can say the majority of scholars believe in the existence of One God, and those dazzled by the after effects of science are in awe and do not take the time to ponder. Like a child eating candy, only focused on its sweetness; as soon as the candy is gone, he wants more candy but does not ask how it came into being. The existence of God is 1 + 0 = 1 (One God + His creation = One God).

What would happen if one day the Queen woke up and discovered that she had testicles?

Answer: She wouldn't be the Queen. She'd be the King.

My point: People can ask "if" questions all day, with all sorts of theoretical scenarios.

Besides, if you believe in God and then find out after you die that He doesn't exist after all, what have you lost? Nothing.

But, if you don't believe in God and then find out after you die that He DOES exist, you'll have a lot to answer for.

So, doesn't it make more sense to take a leap of faith and believe in God -- if for no other reason than you have nothing to lose?

We're already there - "All thinking men are atheists", as Hemingway said, but nevertheless many millions of people still believe in religion even though such a belief is untenable. People will believe what they want to believe, rather than what is logically justified, for the foreseeable future at least.

when religiosts poke their nose in the fields they are least qualified, they become subject of redicule.religion is not the science of Nature, nor are they eternal.all religions are man made.these are supportive to society in the sense, they cater to moral code of conduct.as constitution, parliamnet, justice, law&order machinery govern the society,so too religions are obliged to discharge their moral/virtuous functions.but spiritualty is the way to realise the divinity in man.Nature,societ,man&man-made religions are transient but God is eternal. religious addicts, codes, rites&rituals are change/improvise as these are relevant to the times. There would be more Galileos, but simulteniously there will also be divine manifestation like Buddha,Jesus,Krihna&Mohammad.

Religion and spirituality are two different things. Religion is man made to keep humans in line. Spirituality is something that cannot be proven or disproven. Its just having love in your heart and feeling that what goes around comes around. Kinda like what you give you get.

Religion and Spirituality are not true or false because of long past events. Religion and Spirituality are true or false based on your life in the here and now.

God is a figment of the imagination , some very forceful people thousands of years ago built on this, saying such as i had a vision and spoke to god, today they would be locked up. one day science will discover our origins, roll on ever seen a poor priest etc.

Honestley, it probably wouldn't change anything. Youd have people saying it was the work of Satan, or that it wasnt used right, or it was a farce, blah blah blah. Youd probably have more extremists on either end, and the balance would shift, but I dont think it would stop religion of the hard core extremists.
