Assuming they've seen all the touristy stuff (theme parks--D-land, Knotts, Universal, Tragic Mountain, etc., and the water parks---Hurricane Harbor, etc. ) you can always hit a beach, or a museum (i.e. California Science Center). In the downtown area, there's also Olvera Street and Chinatown. My kid is into trains, so Traveltown in Griffith Park (or LA Live Steamers, next door to Traveltown) is fun for him. In Long Beach, there's always the Queen Mary and Aquarium of the Pacific.
Universal isn't really a studio tour anymore, but I hear that NBC and Warner have such tours---I haven't been on them, so I can't say. You could get tickets for a taping---call Audiences Unlimited (if you do this, get there early or you won't get in). Check out concerts at the Greek or Gibson Amphitheater or Hollywood Bowl, or just concerts at the park in Warner Center (and other parks) on summer weekends.
Hope this gives you a few ideas. Have fun!

For your wife/Girlfriend/sister/aunt:
THE Jewelry District in downtown at 5th and Hope. All those office buildings are NOT office buildings. Every "office" is a jewelry store/manufacturer. You just go around and shop. The prices are better if you get off the ground floor. I like the building right at the corner of Hope and Fifth on the Southwest corner. Go to the seventh floor. You'll figure it out.
Or Go to the Big Black building on the East side of Pershing Sq on Hope. I like the jeweler on the 9th floor all the way in the southeast corner. Its a big building.
2. The Allee at Olympic near Santee. It is three blocks long in the Garment District. Many of the vendors are selling in a bazzar setting right out the back of their wherehouses/factories. Some is junk other is not. There are plenty of other stores all around in the nearby blocks.
3. On the last friday of the month, the California Mart sells off the samples in the showrooms. Olympic Blvd and 9th. It's three huge buildings. It sells everything from clothing, housewares, and other personal goods. The LATEST in fashion which hasn't even hit the stores yet. And dirt cheap. Bring cash...lots and lots of cash.
4. Thursdays from 10-4 the A.N. Abell Auction house in Commerce. It's in a wherehouse district off the 5 freeway Garfield exit... Whole estates are cleared out. Barbara Streisand cleared out the contents of one of her houses. You can find anything and nothing. But you have to sign up and bid. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff I've found there.
5. The Inn of the Seventh Ray- Topanga Canyon in Topanga ... the last word in California dining. It's outdoors by a creek under the trees and its vegetarian plus fish now.
6. Malibu Commons during the week. In Malibu just north of PCH. Two sides of the street but it looks like NOTHING from the outside. Inside, OMG...movie stars and their kids galore. The shops surround an outdoor courtyard with a playground over sand with benches and cafes all around. Really pretty. I once saw Richard Dean Anderson with his daughter there.
7. Venice Beach on Saturday morning. If you get there very early, like 6-8 am, you will see the men working out on Muscle Beach outdoor gym equipment. Real eye candy.
8. Santa Anita Races- in Arcadia. If you ever wanted to watch the ponies run, this is the place. Only please, dress up so you can enter the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse has a dress code. It's soooo worth it. Men must where jackets and ties. Ladies must wear elegant dresses or elegant suits. And they enforce it strictly. You can sit and have lunch at a white linen covered table while you watch the horses run. It's the living end. If you don't dress up, you go stand with the riff raff.
10. Whale watching if you are there from Dec to April. You can book it from San Pedro or from Long Beach or from Newport. Great fun.
Otherwise take the hydrofoil...not anything less not those rickety old boats you'll get sea sick ... and go to Catalina for the day. Great good fun to be on a boat in the channel on a nice day.
Good luck. There's a lot to do there.
