The cat probably gets scared of the dog so tries to maintain its dominance for its own protection, also it may want to attach when the dog looks at it making eye contact, we have the same problem, the cat is ok sitting close to the dog so long as the dog does not make eye contact or if he does he must learn tol look away , if we do catch him staring we just tell him no before he upsets the cat, he now knows and is pretty good about it, now they sit happily together.

This is so because if your mom has had the cat a long time they think thats there home not anyone elses house. So when another animal comes in the house there territorial. This is the same way with my cat and dog. So Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!.

Most...........not all...........but most cats dont get along with dogs. Is the dog annoying the cat? Trying to play with it? The cat may not want to play and being mean is the only way for the dog to take a hint.

Cats are dominant creatures, and they like to take over. I have two cats and a dog, and my older cat keeps the dog and other cat in line. Your Mom's cat established dominance over your dog, and its natural.

Cats and dogs are naturally territorial against each other. The cat is probably afraid of something bigger, louder, and droolier than it is, and attacks, or hisses, or is just mean, even if the dog was just sniffing it, or whatever.

that's normal , especially if they are not raised together, and normally cats and dogs don't get along. You didn't mention what kind of dog you had or how the dog treats the cat

dogs have masters cats have servants-old hippie here-cat will mellow out after a little while right now he is teaching the dog that he is capable of hurting him-it will settle down sooner or later some dogs are slow to learn
