It is a smart tag recognized by Radio Frecuency antennas
RFID (Radio Frecuency IDentification) are now replacing code bar and introducing a new way of managment in all the areas my friend... like... In markets tagging every product u can see stadistics of the sales .In cargos or deliveries u can know wheres the packague guided by GIS or mixed with other technologies. In workflow when u send a letters or work in ur office u can track 'em with the tags and antennas where the document is going, who recieves it, who sign it, when, how....
These tags r so small that u can use 'em inside the skin of animals or humans to track 'em. Well there r a lot of aplications search white paper of RFID in this site:

I think you may be looking for RFID which stands for Radio Frequency Identification. Tags are part of an overall RFID system, either passive or active. Active tags can used for tracking cargo such as the cargo containers you would see on huge cargo ships. An example of a passive tag would be a "pass" on your key chain where you wave the "tag" in front of the keypad at the gas station and the "reader" inside the machine reads your tag.
