Dachshunds are less maintainence in the grooming area. Other than that, I suppose you should look at the ''cons'' of each breed, and decide which you are better prepared to handle.

Dachshunds - skin conditions, heart disease, spinal disc problems, diabetes, urinary stones, eye disorders

Maltese - Slipped stifle, eye infections, hypoglycemia, teeth, and gum weaknesses.

I have a couple of mini-doxies and have had others. They are loving and low maintenance..for a dog. But they are nearly impossible to completely housebreak (rumor has it this may be true for other small breeds too).

Maltese can be tempermental and need to go to the groomers often. Check prices in your area because this can get very expensive!

I used to have Corgis. They are a little bigger (usually around 20lbs) but they have a big dog personality in a small body. They are very easy to train, very smart, good with kids and don't need haircuts.

depends on where you want your money to go. Malteses need lots of grooming for their entire lives. Weenie dogs have intense back and shoulder problems when they get older. However, dachshunds are much more affectionate.

I would get a Maltese, because dachshunds as they get older usually have back problems because of their long bodies which can cost alot of money.

Dachsunds shed, unless you get a long haired one and maltese's don't. You should check out the personalities of the specific dog you are getting. Check out the humane society. They always have small dogs that need good homes.

Well, my cousin has a dachshund and it barks and chases strangers, but, I would recommend them. Get them to know your family and friends a little before you take it to a park. If they still bark a lot at strangers, you should take the 'lil guy to puppy school. I think long haired are more friendly than short or mini.

Daschund if you want a dog that looks like a hotdog minus the bun. But if you want something more diva like, a Maltese definitely.

Dachunds are affectionate, well behaved dogs. I would prefer one over a Maltese. Maltese puppies are adorable, but very yippy and extremely hyper. So it depends on your personal preference.

Dachshunds, hands down. If you lay them across the back of your neck in the winter, they make a great scarf!

Decide how much grooming you want to do. Maltese require more grooming but, it you like to do it...I'd go with the Maltese.
