Could be from allergies. My dog had ear infections and bad eye boogers. When we changed his diet to help the ear infection the eye boogers pretty much cleared up too. He still gets the normal ones from waking up in the morning but it isn't bad like it used to be.

His eyes may water excessively. That's fine if the gunk is from that, but if it gets green gunk then, your dog may have a lack of tears and need like visine to fix the problem. My beagle's drain too and it is from an excessive amount of tears. Just something cosmetic.

You do not need tobathe the dog just getthose little wipes for tears. They remove the gunk and tear stains.
Dogs like humans get sleep boogers and dust and such in their eyes. But we can wipe ours they can't so you have to.

My cat has that - It can either just be like the gunk we get in our eyes or it could be an eye infection. I took my cat to the vet to check and it turned out to be an infection. If you are worried or it seems to be excessive, take him to a vet,

They are eye boogers it's the same stuff comes out of your eyes at night except they can't clean it off and it stains their fur. There are soaps that you can purchase at petstores to help clean it better.
