I've been in the hospital for mental health reasons 9 times and I have a pretty long history of mental health issues. I've heard that if you've had these problems, that you will never be able to get a license for or own a gun. Does anyone know the true laws about this?

*edit* I do not want to own a gun, I was just wondering... And some of you that implied that I would become a killer, that is really ignorant of you. I would never ever hurt anyone.

Unless any of your mental health issues resulted in a felony conviction, you should have no problem purchasing a gun. The background check for firearm purchases will not reveal your hospitalizations or mental health issues, only your criminal history. But honestly, given your background it may be best to stay away from guns unless you really feel that your problems are behind you.

Hello, first you have gotten some bad answers, buying a weapon ( gun) is covered under federal laws ( and more restricted by state laws)
There is a question on the federal application that asks do you have mental health ......( sorry not up on the exact wording)
So untill you are cured and have no problems you may well be restricted from buying a weapon from a store.
( and of course for your safety and the safety of others)
This restriction does not exist if you buy a weapon ( gun) from a private party, since there is no paper work or filing in most states for private sales.

If you were to own a gun, and you happened to shoot some one, then guess what? They are going to point at your record of hospitalizations and say you were incapable of handling situations, that were stressful and you were in no shape to own a gun, or be in possession of one.
You shouldnt need a gun. Most households dont need a gun, as you can have a baseball bat, or large knife or anything else to protect you from any intruders.
Many locks on the doors and windows, will stop those who are not "determined" to enter your residence. Get a dog, best deterrant there is!
Its best you dont have a gun, and just forget about this factor in your life...
I wish you well..

That's correct. No mentally-unstable person should ever own a firearm. Just accept that as a way of life. Other people shouldn't own a gun are felons, parolees, and others on probation as well. Why did I say that? Because it's the law!

Someone already suggested you contact an attorney and that's good advice if you're serious about wanting to own a firearm. Each state has their own requirements and even federal law places certain restrictions on people with mental problems.

Liberals do NOT want to take guns away... (speaking AS a liberal with a gun!) If you keep voting republican you will soon not be able to AFFORD to buy a gun!
It will depend on what you were in for, what state you live in and possibly even what city. You would need to check with your local law enforcement agency or at your local gun shop as to what the requirements/regulations are.

Have you even been ajudicated mentaly defecteive......? This is one of the question on the application when you go to buy a firearm. SO, yes you will not be able to buy a firearm from a retailer. But you can buy and own one off the streets, just dont get caught with it or you could be charged with a felony

That is true. Significant mental health issues are a bar to gun ownership.

The Constitution says we have the right to "bear arms". If you meet the prerequisites, you should demand that your rights under the Constitution be honored as a US citizen!
