Yoga is excellent. It can be intense without putting a great deal of pressure on muscles and joints. It gets your heart rate up, which burns calories. It builds long, lean muscle, which in turn raises your metabolism and burns fat when you are not working out. It can make your knees more flexible by gradually increasing their range of motion. Walking, Swimming, Pilates are also all very effective. But, I would definitely recommend yoga. I've been doing it for 5 years. I played footbal in high school, but the first time I did yoga was literally the hardest physical workout I've ever had. But, afterwards, you feel calm, not tired. You'll have more energy. My suggestion is find a class or borrow a video and try it out. I think you might like it.

Squats & lunges aren't really 'cardio' or aerobic. If your knees are bad, you might want to try an elliptical machine - your knees don't bend alot and there is no impact.
If you are looking for circuit training, which can be aerobic, it's simply exercising continuously - usually on Nautilis type machines. You can't take breaks or rests as it will lower your heart rate, creating an anaerobic workout.

Aw, I have a bad knee also...The eliptical machine is made to be easy on the knees. It's really the only machine I can use for the meantime. Start slow and build up, time and resistance. Plus it burns tons of calories.
