Have you tried tylenol? I don't think it's supposed to really hurt. Try tylenol and if that doesn't help, I'd call the piercer and see what they say and if they sound like they're full of crap, go to the doctor, but be prepared for a lecture.

To relieve pain from a freshly pierced tongue you can let ice melt in your mouth. Ice cream, Popsicles, and slushies will be your best friends. Ibuprofen will help relieve pain and swelling also. Don't use a mouthwash with alcohol as it's harsh and kills all the good bacteria too, biotene or any alcohol free mouthwash works well if used after eating or drinking anything but water. Just try the ice, ibuprofen and try to not talk more than necessary until the swelling has gone down. As for the previous answers that says its infected I'm sure it's not, unless you have other symptoms besides the "pain" you described.

Okay, here's the deal....while mouth wash is fine, I was personally told to not use any mouthwash containing alcohol during the healing process as it would be too harsh and irritate the piercing. Listerine has alcohol in it. Use an alcohol free mouth wash.
Also, use a salt rinse to keep the area clean. I sprayed mine with H2Ocean sea salt spray and rinsed my mouth with Epsom salt mixed with water. Epsom salt can be used to reduce swelling, but be REALLY careful not to swallow it. I think if swallowed in too large a dose, it can be dangerous. I think you can actually swallow small amounts of it for some medical reason......maybe for a laxative....but I think it is dangerous if you take too much, so try not to swallow any of it. Just rinse and spit it all out.
If you're teeth aren't cold sensitive, you should hold crushed ice in your mouth to reduce the swelling. The swelling is probably part of the reason your tongue is so sore.
Do not eat anything spicy for the first week or two and avoid dairy products during this time as well (not sure why the dairy is a no-no, but that is what my piercer told me). Also be careful about the texture of food as it may be irritating your tongue. Some foods are less painful and irritating to eat than others. Experiment with things that don't require too much chewing. Of course, I wouldn't recommend peanut butter, either, since it requires a lot of high pressure licking on the roof of your mouth. Think applesauce, baby food (that may require you to lick too much, but it was good for me), non-spicey soup, etc.
You can try taking some over the counter pain killers as well. I took motrin, but you may prefer something else. Or, as was suggested, use ora-gel.
I would also suggest that you look for signs of infection. If it appears to be infected, go to a doctor to get some infection medicine to add to your cleansing rotuine.

I had my tongue pierced when I was 14 and it didn't hurt at all, just a bit of swelling. If you are really worried, see a doctor, not the piercer.

Take some tylenol and go to sleep. Don't forget to wash your mouth out with yellow listerene every hour. It will hurt until it heals and the only way it will heal is if you make sure it doesn't get infected by using listerene enough...that means after every time you eat, drink, or smoke, and rinse your mouth for at least 3 minutes every hour. I had mine done several years ago and it hurt for about a week. Best wishes

Ibuprofen works wonders. It's ok to take four 200mg tablets every 6 hours. Ice water and popsicles help also. Biotene or Crest ProHealth are great to use because they don't have alcohol.

well it may be infected, first try ORAL GEL like the stuff they use for tooth aches, that should numb the pain. Next swish with warm salt water, and keep it clean and germ free by swishing with Listerine, or Listerine strips..
