The other night I was having a hard time getting to sleep. I tried most of everything--taking deeps breaths, drinking warm milk, all that. But the only time I really started feeling tired was when I counted sheep. Why is that? Why does counting sheep jumping over a fence make us tired?

I think its not really the sheep or the fence has much
to do with it. What makes us tired is the brain work it
takes and all the imagination involved, plus keeping up with what number is next etc... Alot to think of with your
eyes closed and laying in bed does the trick.

Sometimes I get so wound up thinking about things that I can't go to sleep. Then I realize that I have insomnia and get even more anxious worrying about that. So, I try doing something very boring and monotonous, it does not require too much concentration, but takes my mind off my problems. Voila, counting sheep. The next thing I know, it is time to get up.

Three suggestions: 1. Warm milk 2. Running a mile 3. Watch the Spice Channel Though I don't suggest doing all three at once.

The monotomy of it. You could also count trees or turtles or anything, as long as it's monotonous and keeps the mind occupied so it doesn't think about all the problems, stesses and questions in your life.

I think it is a way for a brains to go into a slight meditation mode which in turn relaxes our minds and bodies making it easier to fall asleep.

It takes your mind off of your daily problems, and racing thoughts and lets you concentrate on something contrite. It gives your brain a chance to forget the day and think of counting. of course it works well unless they start baaaing. hee hee

It's like hypnosis, maybe. Back & forth, monotony.

It doesn't work for me -- deep breaths and reading do.
