Some people believe that way.
Its not true, church does not always bring you closer to God.
"Where two or more are gathered in my name, there will I be also"

There are people who believe that way. However, as someone said, "Living in a garage does not make you an automobile and joining the church won't make you a Christian."
That said, it is important to find a group of Christian friends and meet with them and fellowship with them each week. It may be a church or you may know of some people who believe in God who like to fish (we'll say that you do too and you want some fishing buddies). Go fishing with your Christian friends. All of you will have a nice time and you may learn some bit of knowlege about God that maybe you hadn't thought of. You may help someone to figure out a problem. Maybe you see the problem in a different way since you aren't personally involved and can view it in a detached manner and maybe you have the solution for your friend's problem. This is why you should meet with Christians each week to be closer to God. You do not have go to church to be closer to God. He's everywhere. Just look out your window every day and see the beautiful trees, the blue sky, listen to the birds, look at the flowers and shrubs, look at the moon at night, see the stars. God made all that. He is in all that. I believe that He is not in some churches because there are such fights there and there is no help there for anybody.

From the old times of the bible the Temple was taken to be the place to talk to your God. Some had the Synagogue. In the current times of the Christ, the Church is seen as place to meet your God. The Jews Still have the Synagogues but for the Christians Christ-hood is the church and is the only thing seen to be closer to God.

Not only do people say it but God says it also. Hebrews 10:25 says, "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another- and all the more as you see the Day approaching." You can be close to God where ever you are and your heart and mind are 'in' Him. But there is something about being with other believers. "Two is always better than one. For if one falls, he has the other there to pick him up. But if one falls and he is alone, who is there to pick him up." You can find encouragement, strength, and also the extended teaching of the Word of God(sermon). The enemy loves nothing better than for you to stay away from other believers because if he can get you to do that, he feels that he has a chance to get into your mind. Also it is his job to try to draw division in the house of God. After all he comes to steal to kill and to destroy.(John 10:10) I use to feel the same way but it was just because I didn't want to go. Now I have realized that when the enemy tries to make me stay at home rather than go to church, I get up and go wholeheartedly because I know there will be something said or done that day that will help me in my walk with God. I hope this helps you some. May God Bless You

Some say that and for some it is true. If one can find a good church home where those who make up the church are there to worship and study the Word they are fortunate. I believe, I KNOW, God is ALL AROUND. He is not confined in the structure of the church. Those who keep Him there and judge others who have a different relationship with God are missing the point.
Gotta pray for them. Where do you find God?

I don't think going to church will bring you closer to God. Going to church just encourages me to TRY to get closer to God in all aspects of my life.

The church set it up that way so that they could make money....think about how differnt things would be if we could all just be close to god and not have to go to church and give them money? Have you been to a catholic church lately?? thoes places are a great example of how poor church goers money gets stupidly spent....gold plated statues...If you didn't think you had to go to church thoes temples wouldnt exist. Read the gnostic gospels...they teach that the church is within your heart...and we all have the ability to be close to god without a middle man.

Going to church won't make you a Christian any more than going to a garage will make you an automobile.
Having said that, I would like to note that it is always a good thing to surround yourself with like-minded people. Church is generally the best place to find Christians...there are a few of them in the general mass.

WE are supposed to Gather and Assemble. You can gather and assemble in a "building" every "Sunday" if you want to. The Body of Christ is the CHRUCH, not a building. The EARLY CHURCH went from HOUSE to HOUSE!!!! What-ever!!!! The purpose of Gathering and Assenbling so's that GOD can work Amongst' US!!! GOD is a SPIRIT and HE flow's through us and when we Gather together in one place(where two or more Gather'ed together in MY NAME, there I will be.) So that's why we Gather, so GOD can come amongst' US and help us, and HE can use people and their GIFT"S HE has given them. Example: if a Brother in Christ hadn't compelled me to go see this Prophet of GOD in this building where the Body of CHRIST was Gathering, I wouda never been Prophecied to at that time!!!!
