There are lots of remedies people claim work. A burning candle near the onion, run it under water first, etc. What I have sometimes done is just wear swim goggles if it's really bad. I used to have a real problem, but I think I've gotten used to it, since it's gotten a lot better.

Being a restaurant owner and using about 150 pounds of onions a day...I've found that if I put my large cutting board over the sink and run cool water that it helps.
Also, if I'm wearing my contacts, the fumes don't bother me at all...so protective eyewear should be helpful.
After you're finished chopping the onions...wash your hands with tomato juice and it will remove the smell from your skin.

let the onion sit in a bowl of ice water for about 10 minutes before chopping...usually prevents the stinging !!

You get that burning sensation because as you cut the onion, some liquid from inside it goes into your eyes. That means if you protect your eyes, nothing will get in them, and it won't hurt. Swim goggles?

Sounds stupid, but in a Mexican restaurant where I used to work, the cooks would wrap saran wrap around their head and eyes while they chopped tubs of onions.

Use one of the little choppers, self contained, fill it with onions and put the chopper in a big clear plastic bag, let it set when you are done, works great.

light a candle and set it next to your cutting board. this doesn't eliminate but does reduce the burning.
