For instance, "Dave" is a nickname for David. If I forget & use my nickname on my airplane ticket, will this affect my ability to board the plane, since my license says "David"?

i'd say passport name only to board any flight

The airline staff usually check that the name on the ticket tally with your identification. So if you use Dave and your passport say David, they have a right to stop you from boarding as you might be impersonating someone else. After 9/11, the checks are stricter.

If your nickname is a common one, Dave for David, Bill for William, Jim for James, etc, you should have very little problem.
If the nickname has no relationship to your real name i.e. Your name is John Michael Smith, but your nickname is Wally, you quite likely will have a problem.

Depends on how different your nickname is from your real name. You might be able to slide past with Dave vs David but if you had Dav-O vs David it might not work. Anyway with the security at airports now it's better to just remember the correct name.

If your nickname is as easy as "Dave' you should not have a problem. Mine is more difficult and I use it at work -- when they book my flights under my nickname rather than my full name on my license I always have a hard time boarding a flight.

No, As long your "nickname" is actually a shortened name
If you name is Roger, and your Nickname is "Bubba" and that's what you put on your ticket you may have a problem, but not like David - Dave

it doesnt matter cuz ive put nessa on a ticket and my real name is vanessa so ur all good!
