Real is a relative term. OBE is true. Many people are born with it, some achieve it during life time.
Normally those who have lesser lustful desires, are a little pure at heart and harmless in general, achieve this early.
OBE is achieved, when the Kundalini releases some eneergy in the system, and this energy when reaches the third eye(Agya chakra), it changes the vibrations of the mind to higher levels.
The arrival of this energy is felt as a loud noise, exterme vibrations, sound of earthquake, or sound of waves, seconds before the OBE
The mind when vibrates at a higher frequency, it awakens in another dimension (astral plane), The more you are comfortable, the more are the chances that next time you reach the next higher level.
any anxiety, or fear or anger, will break the OBE with a jerk
Yoga and meditation of Hindus, and Vipasana of buddhists, helps in achieving OBE fast.
There are certain Pranayamas (Breath exercises as per hindu yoga system), which give a sure progress in OBE
For hindu yogis, OBE is a normal phenomenon, in the beginning which they transcend later

Astral projection, also known as OOBE (Out-of-body-experience) is the condition in which the physical body is passive, as if sleeping, while the conscious mind is aware of what goes on but from a different viewpoint from that of the physical body.
Actually, the out-of-the-body experience is quite a natural and spontaneous thing that occurs and has happened to all of us at some time during our sleep. However, most people either do not recall at all, while others are unsure because their recollection is often mixed up with dream material. But, yes, it is quite real.
Some people have practiced and perfected the ability to project out of their bodies at will, and have gone on to write about their experiences, as well. You may want to look up the author Robert A. Monroe and read about his many interesting experiences.
Being able to leave your body at will has great advantages and opens up all kinds of interesting and exciting possibilitites. There are in general two types of astral travel:
1) the kind that you normally hear about, in which people move about on earth, seeing friends, carrying out various works such as healing.
2) Or, the other kind of adventure in which you travel not in the material world, but in the astral world which is just beyond the material world. This is what is known as the behind-the-scenes level where you can see and examine more deeply the underlying state of things.

I was once told that it is for real, and that you can achieve it as follows:
When you dream that you are falling off something, you try and stop yourself from falling. The sensation of 'falling' is (allegedly) caused by your astral self emerging from the dead weight of your sleeping body. So if you try to stop, you can keep projecting and actually astrally leave your sleeping body - and then float around at will to wherever you wish to go.
A friend of mine claimed that he could do this at will, but I can never predict when I am going to fall of (say) a cliff in a dream!
I did try to stop myself falling once... it was a VERY strange sensation, and went on for ages, and I was convinced that what he'd told me was true! However, I chickened out at the last minute and fought my way out of what was happening and woke up!
A word of caution though! Some people believe that there is an astral cord which connects your inner self to your outer self... if this cord is severed then apparently you will die! (My friend didn't mention anything about this, but I guess it would be wise to avoid anything sharp when projecting!!!).

I'd have to say yes, it's real. In my only experience of astral projection, I appeared in a room I had never been in physically, and was able to desrcibe a number of details I couldn't have guessed. It hasn't happened since, although I have had very lucid dreams that felt like I was physically in another place. The purpose of it? No idea, though Padre Pio apparently projected, for whatever that's worth.....

Astral projection is when you leave your body and wander about on the "astral" plane.
It is accomplished through techniques and exercises meant to enhance your visualization and your suggestability. You are basically hyptnotizing yourself and using visual suggestion to make yourself believe you are leaving your body.
I know because I did this in high school and I got myself to think on several occaisions that I was leaving my body. I had lucid dreams where I could go and explore the world.
It was very interesting and the dreams were quite vivid and exhilirating. I do not believe that it was "real" though - I think it was a suggestion that I gave myself and my mind believed.

Astral projection has been shown pretty conclusively to be a wake induced lucid dream. If you are interested, it is pretty easy to learn.
This is not to say it is not real. If you convincingly experience it in your mind, then it is no different than your waking life. After all, everything you experience in your "real" life is just a model created by your mind based on what your senses pick up. I guess you can say your waking life is just as fake as your dream world.

To astrally project, do one of the following WITH SUPERVISION.
Depending on your weight you might drink a bunch of bottles of robotussen(a dissasociative, making your body less meaningfull to you and allowing your conscience to wanter)[GOOGLE:ROBOTrip]
You might try Mushrooms, but effect varies, I've only heard of one person projecting from it. [GOOGLE: Magic Mushrooms]
Finally, you can close your eyes and picture a place and say you've been there, because we all know thats effective. I'd go with one of the first two, or I'd get some mystical training of some sort.
