You have to register using phone or internet, so Microsoft can check if that product key has been registered before.
The phone number is free to ring.
If you have borrowed it from a friend, it is illigel to reinstall it on your computer and after 60 days without installing, you will not be able to use XP.
However you can download a crack, when you download it, open your computer in safe mode and execute the program, and when you restart your computer you will not have to activate it, altohugh this process is illegal.

There is no way to activate Windows XP without either an on-line connection or calling Microsoft. When you attempt to activate, if you do not wish to do it on-line and select the telephone method, you will be provided the telephone number.

Last time I checked, those were the only two options on the install CD.

sometimes you can do mail in regestrationdepends on what version u have.
