The Catholic Church cares about the people who are being influenced by the outright lies and half-truths of the "fictional" story.

I have already seen dozens of questions from confused people on this website asking, "Is this (obvious lie) true?"

It looks to me like the concerns of the Church were well founded.

With love in Christ.

I know that this has been said before but "The DaVinci Code" is a work of fiction. There are only a few facts in there and those have been stretched a bit. Such as the "fact" that Jesus had a child, while that has not be proven nor disproved it is always a possibility that while Jesus was God in flesh that he could have fathered a child. It is more likely however that the famous "bloodline" was from one of Jesus's sister or brothers (which he did have) Also many of the locations that Dan Brown used in the book didn't have anything to do with bloodline myth, they were just a lot better dramatically. I know that this doesn't clear anything up, but do not take the book as a scientific textbook or as a religious text.

The Catholic "religion" has nothing to hide. The Catholic "Church", on the other hand has been shrouded in secrecy during its' entire existance. You may be of a different faith, but if yours is a Christian faith you should know that its' beginnings sprung from catholicism. An illustration of secrecy is in the very fact that the Bible, in all its' volumes was under the secret control of the (Roman Catholic) College of Cardinals for the first 400 years of its' existance. The version you now read & maybe live by, was first edited by the Church & later edited by numerous protestant faiths.
"The DaVinci Code" is a fictional story contrived by a modern day novelist. Because the story suggests outlandish possibilities that are contrary to the teachings of the Church, the Catholic Church is concerned with the possible impact & influence the story may have on young minds. This is not an unusual position for the Church to take on any literary or film work that challenges basic Christian principals.

I'm not really sure that the Catholic religion has all that much to hide, but I assume the reason for the opposition to the DaVinci Code would stem from the fact that the author embellishes and out-and-out makes up ideas with regard to Catholicism. This in itself shouldn't be too bad to think of, since the book is fiction and meant to entertain, but the problem is a lot of people (perhaps the asker of this question?) take it as historical fact...
I love Star Wars, but don't think there are actual Jedis hopping around some galaxy far, far away...

I wouldnt call it hiding. Maybe the catholics are not ready to give up all of their secrets. maybe people aren't ready to listen. the public jumps to a lot of conclusions, but I just recently got back from a vatican tour and they weren't hiding anything. Opressive or positive. the facts are amazing. DaVinci is a piece of fiction. DaVinci was a creative scientist and artist. He was full of imagination, just like the writer of the DaVinci Code. I think that this piece has created controversy about a religion that is just not thoughtful and the controversy is very uncaring. I think your question lacks thought.

They don't care about "The DaVinci Code", they care about what they believe in. They religion really does not have anything to hide but does not want other religions making it seem that they do. "The DaVinci Code" which is a fiction story says things that others will believe. They do not want catholics to lose their faith but believing too.

I happen to be Catholic, and I don't believe that we are "hiding" anything. What exactly do you mean by "hiding?"

I'm a proud Irish Catholic who thinks that those who believe the DaVinci Code to be something true need to remember that the book is fiction, and only one person's theory. I do not see much truth in it. And I happened to enjoy the movie, I found it interesting.

First things first, dear... Catholicism is not a religion in itself. It is a sect of Christianity. As for the controversy over the Church hiding facts, I can't say if that's true or not. All I can say is that they protest "The DaVinci Code" mainly over the claims that Christ was not divine... and secondarily over the claims that Opus Dei is a sinister organization. I can't say much about that part, because I know very little about them. But I can say that the book was a great work of fiction, and the only way to defend against the errors that you think are in it is to study the book and find ways to counter those errors that you find.

It could be offensive to those with strong convictions about their faith because it does claim to be based on facts that just can't be proven. On the other hand, some may be fearful of the book because they haven't got the strength in their faith that it requires to read something that opposes your beliefs.

I watched the movie recently and it was amazing. If this is true (the movie) the church wants to hide the fact that "The DaVinci Code" states that Jesus was just a human, that he wasn't this divine being that we have come to believe. That he did Marry and have a child. And if this was the case that would mean that Mary Madeline’s child (excuse the spelling) would have been the bloodline of Jesus and therefore been the ruler of the church (a women). The Holy Grail was not a cup but Jesus’ bloodline. That is what I got from the movie.

I do not think that it is an issue of having something to hide (eventhough they may be hiding some things). The catholic religion is angry that an authour took facts about thier religion and bent them to make a interesting, but fictional story. They feel as though thier religion is being seen as false and is being questioned by many because of this movie. Think of it this way. How would you feel if someone convinced a whole bunch of people that something you believed in with all your heart was false and the person who convinced those people did so with half truths.

as a matter of a fact they have a lot to hide. the catholic religion is made up of fairytales and catchy songs to get peoples attention so that they can put money in the hats of the pastors so they can buy stuff. the catholic religion is basically soley entertainment. i mean look at it they have television shows and songs on the radio every second. just last week a so called pastor was caught for telling elderly people that he could help cure their athoritis if they send him money. the catholic religion is against the movie because it goes against what they teach and they are afraid that the movie will disencouage its followers.
