There are those that believe (me included) that the "Nephilim" were the resulting children of humans mating with angelic beings. These are sometimes addressed as the "sons of men" in the text. Some believe that ancient "mythical" legends such as giants and minotaurs and cyclops are actually Nephilim. If true, these beings were likely destroyed by the Flood and/or otherwise killed off or died.
Others believe (not including me) that the Nephilim were beings created by God that lived and existed before Adam and were a part of a "Pre-Adam-ite Rebellion" of sorts.
Proof? Don't have any. This is my belief on this one. I hope you like it!

They were off-spring of the fallen angels and women. Some believe they possed human men, and mated with women, and others believe they took a human form and mated with women. Read Genesis 6. They are often thought to be Giants. They originated after the Fall of Adam and Eve, and just before the flood, and a reason for the flood.
