Why do some people think it's ok to be rude?

Depends on the frame you're looking at. If you're limiting your question as to why people are rude on this forum, Yahoo Answers, I'd say that most people are doing it just for attention or Cathartic release. People who are rude in real life may be having a bad day, or are just relentless jerks.

It has a lot to do with the parents. Their parents end up doing whatever they ask, no matter how rudely, so they learn to treat everyone the same way expecting the same results. There's always one of these types of people in a group.

The confusing part is while people don't like the rudeness, they'll end up catering to this person because (1) they don't want to deal with this rude person getting upset and (2) they've become so used to this person that they don't care anymore.

There is rudeness in its basic form,as in jumping queues,swearing in front of 'ladies',lighting bonfires without warning neighbours to take in washing; that sort of thing, and there is ignorance of the right way to behave. The old-say from 60 onwards-sometimes appear the rudest and charitably I think this is because they have no longer the time to waste being polite to people who don't deserve politeness.All of us I'm sure meet most rudeness with an excess of politeness; possibly to accent the difference to the person being rude.BUT,there comes a time for everyone when only so called rudeness will suffice. It's called speaking up for oneself, and the recipient will not like it.
So in my view I do feel there are times when 'rudeness' is the only way and that at those times it's OK. Mostly however I believe that those who are routinely rude are beyond the pale.

We lack patience for stupidity (that's called sarcasm). As for being rude outside of website, I'm not sure. Some people are very rude in public. I think those people either think they're better than everyone, or have social issues to work out.

Sometimes it is simply a difference between people. Pointless additions to daily life such as an endless "please/thank-you" routine can be left aside if everyone is happy to do so. If someone is not it comes accross as rude.

Then of course there are many people who are more bluntly rude due to not knowing any better or through a lack of consideration and not giving a damn about other people. That seems to be a growing issue.

They are raised by people who think it is OK to be rude. It's one long vicious cycle.

Because they arent' easily offended, so they don't expect any different from others. When you meet such selfish people, it is ok to poke them with a stick and say, "Stop being rude, or I shall poke you again with this stick."
