A Christian is someone who believes in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and is baptized. A Catholic is a specific kind of Christian, one who also believes the Catholic Church was founded by Christ and accepts it as possessing the fullness of Christian truth and the means of salvation

The words Catholic and Christian were once interchangeable. The first Christians called the Church Catholic or universal, to distinguish it from heretical splinter groups that denied necessary Christian truths. Thus the early Christians came to be known as Catholics.

I would have to say that there is more of a difference than just name. However, I won't say that Catholics aren't Christian, but I'm assuming you actually meant evangelical Protestantism, in which case there is a good deal of difference.

I had some conversations with a Catholic priest friend of mine and we were talking about all of this. For example, he told me that Catholics pray to the Virgin Mary whereas Protestants do not. He also said that the Bible is not to be taken literal in any sense since it is merely a collection of stories for our benefit, that we can learn from.

There are numerous difference between the two, the hard line that it really comes down to, that no religion can seem to ever get right, is that Jesus offered Himself and all we can do is accept it. He offers a relationship and seems to indicate time and time again that unless we have that relationship with Him, we don't "get" it, we have missed everything He was teaching us.

In Christianity, there are three branches of Christianity; Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox. The only difference between the three branches is the way the church is operated. Although I am not familiar with the Orthodox Church, the difference I see being the difference between Catholic and Christian is that a Christian is someone who accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and a Catholic is just one of the three branches that a Christian can be and the Catholic Church is the oldest church in the history of Christianity.

Christian and Catholics both fall under the label Christianity. Meaning that Christ is the son of GOD, Lord and Savior...etc.etc.

Catholics however follow a different doctrine if you will. I guess the real big difference would be that Catholics have priests and confession, while other forms and denominations of Christianity have a pastor or reverend and repentance.

Catholics I am sure have repentance but the confession thing is theirs alone pretty much.

A Catholic believes that the decrees of the Pope and the traditions of the Catholic church have as much authority as the Bible, or possibly even more.

A Christian follows the Bible, nothing more and nothing less. There are certain similarities of belief, but great differences between them.

Title only. Catholic people follow the teaching of the Catholic (universal) church that can trace its roots back to the original apostles. When Martin Luther broke away from the Catholic Church, people started calling themselves Lutherans, and Christians, and other names. Christian is a general title to anyone that worships God and believes in Christ as their savior, and that includes Catholic, and all the Protestant sects of it.

Catholics are Christians too I believe, but some of their beliefs are directly in contradiction to the Bible and thus protestants tend to be separated from them. Like, the issue about priests and Mary forgiven of sins when that is stated as blasphemeing because only God can forgive sins. Also the immortality of the soul which is no Biblical, the Bible says that all who die are resting until Jesus returns although there are some in heaven now like Enoch, Elijah, Moses which the Bible specially said were taken to heaven by God.

Catholics are Christian. Its just a denomination of Christianity. There's Baptists, Lutherans, Methodists, etc. They're all Christians, just with a few different practices.

Damian: Catholics do no believe priests and Mary forgive sins. Catholics pray to Mary for her intersession (its like asking a friend to pray for you) and we DO NOT believe she can forgive sins. We do not believe that priests forgive sin either, we confess our sins to him for religious guidance on how to turn away from sin and return to the path of righteousness. You still have to confess your sins to the Lord and be truly sorry for them.

As far as the immortality of souls, SEVERAL Christian faiths believe the soul is immortal. Catholics also believe the soul must be purified before it can enter Heaven. No Catholic doctrine I've ever read says Catholics shoot straight up to Heaven.

FlyersBiblePreacher: What the Pope says does not take precedent over the Bible. We follow the Bible and the teachings of Jesus and the Pope is merely the Lord's servant. The Catholic tradition is BASED on the Bible so it can't take precedent over the Bible.

Curious_Cat: Catholics do not believe Mary is more important than Jesus. Jesus died for our sins and is the son of God, how could Mary be more important? We do not pray to saints and Mary to answer our prayers, we know the Lord is the only one who can answer our prayers. We merely pray for their intersession, its like asking a friend to pray for your since you're ill.

Amy_L: Where do you get your information? Catholics do not believe Jesus is still on the cross. We believe he is seated at the right hand of God because he is the son of God. We believe Jesus died for our sins and rose again. We also believe in the Holy Spirit hence a belief in the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Queenie1480: Catholics do not believe that your family members can pray or buy you out of Hell. Souls that are damned to Hell go to Hell and stay there. We believe that even the soul of those who would go to Heaven must be purified in purgatory and you can pray for those individuals' purification. These souls will go to Heaven no matter what after purgatory, all you're doing by praying for them is asking the Lord to speed up the purification process.
