I think 6 is a good age to start. My son and step-son are 8 and 9 and I have been locking the door for the past couple years.

My oldest son is 5, he started noticing differences around 3 1/2 - 4. I don't make it a huge issue but he seems to understand that we have private times, like I'll say to him, I'm closing the door while I get dressed, I'll be one minute okay? He's also started closing his door now to get dressed and telling me that's what he's doing! It's kinda cute! I'm careful not to make any comments that would make him feel ashamed.

I'd say anywhere from 4-6. I started at 5 but I felt my son would still remember me naked as he got older at age 5. I walked in on my parents at age 6 and I still remember it. Be prepared that your child may not want you to see him/her naked. I know my son was like "well if I can't see you then I'm going to be a little more private myself." He was like that at first and now he's 6 and he's grown out of that- like he doesn't really care if I see him naked or not. I have a neighbor that still remembers her mom and dad walking around like even past age 10 and it "horrifies her". :)

When they are old enough to accidently walk in and see somethng they shouldn't.

Teach your children to knock first and if you have the door locked at times besides when you're naked or having sex, they won't always associate a locked door with "mommy and daddy are being naughty". Lock the door occasionally just to sit and talk quietly together or to just lay in bed and watch tv that the kids aren't allowed to watch.

I guess the earliest you can teach them manners for example I have a 9-5-yr & an 18th month & all know that when a door is closed looked or not looked they shopuld knock before openong the door & wait for the person ask them to come in. Ofcourse if my hubby & I are going to get bussy we make sure our door is looked & if one of our children get to knock on the door we just told him/ her what they want & we take it form there . But we have teach our children to knock before opening a door even or 18 month is learning that way you teach them manners too & most important to respects everyones privacy ......

If the child is the same sex as you, I believe you don't have to hide your body. If they child is the opposite sex, I would think by the age of 7 or eight ( at the latest). Just do it gradually and don't make a big deal if the child does happen to see you naked....our society is too hung up as it is.

None of your kids should enter your private space at any age without knocking. Teach them early that a closed door means the person inside wants privacy. Teach them to knock. They can understand this as early as 4, I would think but every kid is different.

The most common "discovery" age starts around 4 years old. That is when they start to notice body parts and who is a boy and who is a girl. With just wanting to know why.

Mona is completely right!!!!! Why at all??? My parents never locked the door when they had a shower or i didn't locked it either. We are very open minded. This is family!!! I don't understand the hysteria at all.
