For the most part it means that you like someone and want to get to know them better. Usually you are exclusive until you decide either you want to have a serious relationship (boyfriend/girlfriend), or have decided to just be friends or just not continue anything. Good luck!

When you date someone you spend time with them to get to know them to see if you have a possible future together. Different people have different ideas about rather or not you date others at the same time. I always felt you can as long as you are open and up front about it. When someone asks you to, "Go Steady" that means you only date them and nobody else. Just casually mention that you are dating others, don't give names and details. Example, if they ask if you want to go out Saturday night you could say, "I'm sorry, I already have a date for Saturday night, but we could get together Sunday afternoon if you like." Some guys will not date you if you are dating others because they don't like "competition". Like I said, everyone's opinion is different, but to me, dating means you are dating - not in a relationship!

I feel yah that word "dating" can be used all kinds of ways......I think that dating is getting to know each other, spending time with someone while free to date others and then there is another phrase "exclusively dating" meaning one on one! It is all confusing. I am new to the whole dating scene myself and it is a trip!!

Dating is just where you start. It is acceptable to date other people as long as you are honest about it. If you are dating some one for a while and you decide that you don't want to see other people then that person becomes you girlfriend/boyfriend and you no longer see other people.

I would say it depends on how long you've been dating, and whether or not the other person agrees with open dating. I think when you're older dating becomes less involved, but when you're younger dating to me seems like its more 'boyfriend/girlfriend' situation.
The official definition for dating is a) An engagement to go out socially with another person, often out of romantic interest. or b) One's companion on such an outing.

Dating means seeing someone, people, other people,multi-people on a casual basis.

Courting means seeing 1 person.

So if you're dating someone, there's no real commitment.

But if you're courting someone, you two are an item. There is an "emotional" commitment between the two of you.

If I was dating I would date whoever I want and I don't owe anyone an explanation unless I am getting serious with him.
