If you look at history, every great religion seems to go through a cycle of greatness and enlightenment, then persecution and violence, then passivity and peace, and so on.
It happened with the Ancient religions, then the Hindus, Jews, Buddhists, Christians, Muslims and others.

The HUGE difference is that both the christians and the muslims have a built in part to their religion that states that to be a true follower one must convert others to their way of thinking. Both have a long history and tradition of that being used in a "convert or die" way. The christians are getting over that part to a great deal but it is still a major part of Islam .. then again that religion is about 800 years younger than christianity. 800 years ago the christians were committing atrocities that make the Islamic fundamentalists look like amateurs. Will they ever give rise to a man such as The Dali Lama .. probably not because a "live and let live" philosophy is pretty much forbidden by their beliefs. Any religion that functions with a dictum to convert others will never be a peaceful religion.

Such people are not produced by any religion. It is the individual's efforts, past actions that shape the person. The Great Dalai Lama himself will vouch for this. May be understanding properly and following the practices prescribed in a religion that updates the teachings to suit the concurrent situation of an individual may largely contribute to shaping a person to nobility and goodness !

Islam could not create such a man. Buddhism and Islam are 180 degrees apart. Buddhism is peaceful, respectful of others, contains no Dogma. A Buddhist will give up his country before fighting. An Islamist will kidnap, hijack, beat, behead and walk onto buses filled with children and blow it to smithereens. All for a stinking little patch of land smaller then R.I. and he didn't much want or care about in the 1st place.

i think every religion has got people as dalai lama....if you talk about islam, you'll find Prophet mohammed.....he was kind so people followed him and islam came into being....may be people are now misunderstanding his preachings...mohammed said that they should strictly follow their religion which in a way is not wrong....may be he wanted to keep his followers away from crimes by making them follow what he said but as time changed people should change themselves and not blindly follow those things because may be they were of great importance then but now they are not....it is just their ignorance which makes us think wrong about islam....although i am not a muslim but i find that mohammed was right in what he did....it is the people who are doing things in a wrong way.

yikes, this thread is filled with stereotyping and prejudice. People should not be lumped together solely based on religious beliefs.
The Dalai Lama practices altruism, and so should you, regardless of your religious upbringing.
