i THINK i want a small female dog because i have heard that they dont "mark" places like a male dog. I have 2 outside dogs that just wont co operate in the house, door bell rings and they just lie there, plus they are NOT housbroken and it appears for them its harder that if i had a YOUNGER small house dog...THANKS...Tony

whoever told you females don't "mark" places is wrong and I have the female to prove it. lol Ever see a female try to pee higher than a male on a tree?
ANY dog is going to need training. Be careful what you wish for as far as barkers. RESEARCH - much of the advice already on here is not accurate (German Shepherds are not small dogs!!!). How small is "small" to you? The toy versions of some terriers - min pin for example - might work. A little larger the smooth fox terrier is a personal favorite - SMART dogs, easy to care for, not a lot of grooming (or shedding) and they don't know they're small dogs. They have a "big dog" attitude (terriers do even if they're 10-15#). Jack Russels can be good dogs but too much stimulation isn't good...they're HIGH ENERGY. Don't overlook the less popular breeds - Italian Greyhound, Manchester Terrier etc that are all short coated and would be good inside. How much grooming/hair you want to tolerate is a factor too...Shelties were mentioned and they're awesome little dogs...but if you don't have time to groom them regularly the coat is a problem. I typed in what I'm hearing from you on a search site and the West Highland White came up highest of the smaller breeds.
Check out this link:

Plug in what you're looking for and it will come up with a recommended list depending on your needs/interests. This is NOT real dogs for sale and existing on that site - but it *is* based on reality and that is a fast and easy way to come up with breed suggestions for YOU. That said it *is* still suggestions...find an *individual* that fits you as well and both you and the dog should have a long and happy life together! good luck.

Weiner dogs are excellent guardians and they train very fast. By the way, if you want a foolproof, proven housetraining method, consistancy is key....
I've had several dogs and I have trained them without potty pads, newspapers, etc. Of course, you have to remember that they will have a few accidents while they are learning. keep them confined to the kitchen or a hard floor so the smell of pee will not deter them during training. Take her outside and place her on the grass. Say "outside"a few times. When she goes, say "good girl!" and be ready to reward her with a dog biscut or a bite size carrot. Keep her on a tight potty schedule so she will learn when to expect to go out.... 7am, 9:30 11, 1, 3:30, 6, 8, 10:30 before bed. After a few days she will get it. (If she pees on the floor, lead her to it and say no several times and point. she will know that it si not good. right after you show her, take her outside and let her pee using the above training.

13 in. beagle. They are wonderful house pets. Pretty calm, but they will alert you if there is someone at the door and in general, they will protect their territory from a stranger if you are not at home- and they're loud. Also, if you have kids, they are great family dogs as well and usually get along pretty well w/ other dogs.
Also, if you're looking for smaller than that, a mini schnauzer is pretty good and they don't shed as much. Pretty much any small dog can be trained to be "yappy".

I have a Pug and 2 Chihuahuas in the house. The smaller the breed the harder to house break but it is possible. You are right, females won't mark territory and they are easier to house break.
Anyway back to your question. Chihuahuas are yippers. They will bark if someone is at the door or if they hear something in the night. So will my Pug, however I have heard Pugs are pretty quiet, except for the snoring and grunting so mine may be the exception.
Get a Chihuahua!!!! They are adorable and sweet!

A chihuahua or Yorkie. Definitely a female as they are easier to train and aren't as lazy as males. They are very smart and quite barky if thats what you're looking for. A deer head chihuahua is a little bigger and more dog-like than the little foo foo kind. I have one and she is 100% all dog!

Get a sheltie...
Mine is 8 yrs old, about 30-35 lbs.....
knows when someone is in the yard, or pulls into the driveway...
barks so loud and so mean, he backs people off my front porch if they do not know him...
Loyal as loyal could be..
Extremely smart, and can be housebroken quickly

How about an American Eskimo. They are very protective and they will bark to alert you. I have 3 and they were all easy to housebreak. Goodluck with whatever type of dog you pick.
