It is not inappropriate if that person gave you their e-mail adress themselve. And if the content of the e-mail is appropriate.
If you get a telephone number/adress/e-mail adress any other way it is not appropriate at all to contact a person.
If you have something very urgent to discuss with that person - the most approriate way (only appropriate way) is to write a polite letter and mail it to that person.
That can be at his/her workplace or at home.
If you do not hear anything back - the person clearly considered your letter inappropriate and does not appreciate to be contacted by you.
This is the ettiquette and it goes for man/woman/children.
I thought that should be clear to anyone. That is not even in ettiquette books anyone knows that. If you continue to try and contact that person in any way you are punishible unther poenal law for stalking. This law is valid in any country in the world.

Come on! Use your common sense. If you are both professionals and that is established then there should be no problem.
You ask this question as if your intentions are less than honorable. If you don't have a crush on the guy and just want to talk to your former teacher what is the harm.
The real question is why are you contacting him?

if u were given the email address by the person it is definately ok, but the mere fact that u have to ask that questions suggests you just dont want to say "hi". so in ur case i would go for no( if your the one doing the calling)

Not at all...In fact it was a courtesy gesture...It means the guy is pretty well educated...My opinion-he didn't commit any crime by sending you that e-mail...

No, not at all. As long as you remain in your mutual boundaries, it's appropriate. If there is flirting and such going on, then I would think otherwise.

You're asking because you know the intent is not entirely platonic.

As long as the motive is just to say "hi, how are you", then it should be fine.
