I've noticed that every time I go outside of my house when there are birds near my house, they hear me coming out and fly away. According to my dad, he says that birds have excellent hearing, and they can be startled at any particular movement or sound coming into their direction. Well, I want to take pictures of birds and I was hoping if anybody has a tip as to how I can capture one species of bird on camera without making a sound to frighten them.

BIRD FEEDER: Put out bird food. Of course you can't take the photo standing right next to the feeder, but put it somewhere where you can be a good distance away on the patio or something.

BE PATIENT: It's like fishing. You can sit for hours and maybe not get a photo.

GLASS: You could try shooting through glass, but you may have lots of reflection issues.

POND: We have a fish pond with running waterfall. Very few people have this in our neighborhood. During the summer when it gets hot, birds like coming to the little stream/waterfall and goin for a dip ! :) Even a bird bath is good.

FEEDER HUMMINGBIRD: Our friends have two hummingbird feeders. They sit outside every night. Eventually they buzz right by your head.. Now THAT was cool! I heard this bbbzzz zzweeooommm., I pulled away thought it was a huge bee. and here was a cute lil' humminbird! And then another!

well, i'm a bird watcher, and i dabble in photography. yes birds are a bit skittish and will fly off if you're too noisy. but if you want a good look or a good photo, you are going to have to 'hunt' them. sitting quietly is a form of that. you can also get active and go out there with binoculars and look for them. get a camera with a very strong telephoto lens. birds are small small small, and if you don't have a powerful lens, you are going to get a lot of photos of some trees with some funny dots in the center. most importantly of all, don't give up- get roger tory peterson's bird guide books for your area, and happy watching. birds are among the most beautiful things on the planet, and you are going to fall in love.

Try resting very still on a patio or deck... Be ready for them.. If you scare them away by going outside, try seating yourself against a tree some distance from them and wait for them to come back.. Are they water birds or ground birds? Water birds will usually come back quickly... Do you know what time you usually see them? If you know their usual time of arrival, be outside before they land.. If you're still enough and far enough away they won't pay you any mind.. Try taking pictures from an open window, with a good camara you should be able to zoom with out having to be right on top of them. Take a trip to your local library, they will have good books on avian photography...

If they are flying away when you step out side your house
the surroundings may not seem safe to them
if you make changes as little as spreading bird seeds where you find birds maybe theyll be less alert and when birds see each other and if others are calm itll help their instincts to relax also

The best I could say is to repeat what another gentleman said: "strong telephoto lens". I began to read some photography books, and I suggest to look at some of the ones mentioned here, and maybe a magazine that keeps updated regularly on new products and even gives tips on different types of photography, such as Popular Photography. Keep with it, you will be rewarded and thoroughly enjoy it.

You need to find a good spot to sit quietly & take your pictures. I have a blue jay family outside my home & everytime I come out the door they take off...but after a few minutes of sitting on the porch they come back & then I can watch them. They have babies & are teaching them how to fly, very interesting to watch.

Ditto to what everyone else said... but put some food out every time you come out to observe. Soon, they'll associate YOU with an extra free meal, and not be so scared.
