Most are.

I think so.
There could be some other reasons though. I thought I was dumb because I didn't do well in school. It wasn't until I took three IQ tests at 23 years old. I found out I was in the upper 1% of the world. Now they're saying I wasn't challenged enough and I was bored like Einstien... whatever. I was too busy running a band and playing the clubs in Detroit as a young teen. lol. My band members were in their early and late 20s and I was the leader. Now THAT was a challenge!
If I had done well in school and got a scholorship(sp) maybe I would be president right now... but nooooooooooooooooooo! Maybe if they had magnent schools back then I would be an engineer?
I believe that if a child was allowed to do what he or she is interested in instead of being made to study something they hate... they would do much better.

Well, like all soap operas, they tend to exaggerate and stereotype a lot of things. :) Many students do work hard, and many do not, just like in any other country you will find. I don't think you can find a country where ALL the students have perfect work ethic.

Many will say, "Oh, well, American students are laid back because they take their education for granted. Students in countries where an education is not so easy to get appreciate schooling more." Well, this is crap, too. Can you really speak for all American students, and all the students in third-world countries? You can bet that many American students appreciate the fact that they can get an education, and you can bet that a few students from any other country can be laid back as well.

Yes. The parents nor the teachers enforce good study habits. Kids come home to an empty house, so they do whatever they feel like, and parent let them continue once they get home because they are 'too tired' to make the kid do his homework, so they'd rather keep him quiet and let him play is video games. The teachers a not allowed to enforce study habits because parents complain if any disciplinary action is taken. Thus, the kids, in general, don't study enough which is why we rank so low in the world for education. There are too few kids that actually work at their education and excel.

Yes, and while soap operas exaggerate things, they are probably not exaggerating much.

My parents, especially my father, has encouraged me to do everything in my power to accelerate my intelligence and studying power. If we had known more about scholarships and stuff earlier, I would probably be in Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship by now (I did apply, but didn't make it...was a slight bit underprepared).

One of the things affecting our children's studies is a lack of parental support. We have become a "ME" society, and have not focused on anything more than our trivial daily routines, and because of this, we do not look outside our box and see the possibilities of the rest of the world.

I grew up reading, I love to read, and I preach reading to everyone. However, where I live, no one reads, and they actually think it's a chore and a pain. They don't want to learn, because learning is hard. It's sad to see, because learning helps us grow, and they aren't doing it.

American kids are laid back, but that's our own fault. Encourage your children to aim high, and they will.

Yes!, I am way lazy to do homework. I alwayz put school last. It's a good thing that I'm gunna be an actor! And soap operas are stereotypical, and tend to stretch the truth. They are overdramatic. Take those shows- ''all my children''-''one life to live''- ''days of our lives'' - ''general hospitol'', they are all drama queens!

It's not that american kids are too laid back abut studies it's just that compared to other regions in the world American kids are much more laid back about it because they take schooling for granted. You'll find much more studious kids in other countries where it is difficult to receive schooling and excel in life.

When 2/3 of them don't know where Iraq is; when 1/3 can't locate Louisiana on a map of the U.S., we have some real serious problems here.

most have inherited an attitude of apathy for education from their parents and the example the government sets by ignoring educational needs.
