you need to call ur travel agent (if a website, ring their contact hotline) and have the terms & conditions of ur ticket checked.. general rules are:
expensive ticket = small charge for change of flights (max 25%)
cheap/last minute ticket = non-refundable and requires a whole new purchase

MOST airlines charge you a fee for changing the ticket (anywhere from $25-$100) and whatever the difference in the fare is. (Hope it's cheaper than you originally paid!!)
I had a plane ticket to fly from NY to Vegas three weeks after 9/11, and we put off our trip two additional weeks, but the airfare was cheaper than we originally paid, so the $100 change fee only cost us $65.

If you purchased travel insurance and your reason for change is covered, they will compensate for any fees. Even non- refundable tickets generally give you a credit to be used in one year, less a $100 change fee.
I've always been charged at least $50 to change or postpone a trip. My mom was refunded because of insurance.

Usually there is a fee, however some airlines will change it under certain circumstance (ie. death in the family, serious illness, etc)

Usually; yes. Be prepared to pay anywhere between $30.00 to $100.00 more, but you can alter your ticket.
