I need help to settle an argument. I say that Archie Gemmel's goal against Holland was scored during the World Cup in Argentina '78, but my pal is adamant it was during a European Championship game. Please help me to prove he is wrong.

Quite right. The goal was socred during the WC 1978 in Argentina. I am Dutch but I have to admit it is one of the greatest goals ever scored on a World Cup.
It is also included in the movie Trainspotting.

This was in Argentina 1978. After the loss to Peru and draw with Iran, which Team Manager Ally Mcleod convinced us we would demolish, we had "the big one" to worry about. The whole of Scotland erupted when Archie went on that maisy run, beating 5 Dutch players, one of whom was Wim Jansen (former Celtic Manager) who ended up on his Jacksy in the process.
Reality kicked in and Holland came back at us. As Tommy Docherty would say: "Home before the postcards again"

You are correct!
It was voted goal of the tournament that year.
Scotland beat Holland 3-2 but once again lost out on the tournament on goal difference.
Holland went on to meet the eventual winners Argentina in the final.
