Your question seems to imply a bigotted generalization of a great Christian religion. Jehovah's Witnesses are responsible disciplinarians when necessary, and hardly "extreme".
Jehovah's Witnesses do *NOT* advocate corporal punishment, and in fact strongly condemn its use in lands where it is illegal. However, Jehovah's Witness parents do take their godly responsibilites seriously, and hope to raise their children to be well-behaved, productive members of the community and congregation.
Jehovah's Witnesses understand "the rod" to be a metaphor indicating discipline, and discipline means CORRECTION, not punishment.
(Proverbs 22:15) Foolishness is tied up with the heart of a boy; the rod of discipline is what will remove it far from him
(Proverbs 13:24) The one holding back his rod is hating his son, but the one loving him is he that does look for him with discipline.
(Proverbs 19:18) Chastise your son while there exists hope
(Proverbs 29:15) The rod and reproof are what give wisdom; but a boy let on the loose will be causing his mother shame.
(Hebrews 12:10) For they for a few days used to discipline us according to what seemed good to them, but he does so for our profit that we may partake of his holiness.

I dont know what you mean by taking it to the extreme.
God's Word, the Bible admonishes that parents lovingly discipline their children. This is because children are not naturally inclined to do the right thing. The word "discipline"has the thought of giving training that molds and corrects. Thus it involves frequent repetition of instruction so that the child is motivated to comply with it.But discipline involves more.As most parents well know,
a child is often not corrected simply by words. Therefore, disciplinary training may also include chastisement or punishment administered with the purpose of correcting the child.
Jehovahs Witnesses love their children and want only the best for them.To allow a child to continue on a wrong course, that will lead to their own unhappiness is not an act of love on the parents behalf.

I'm guessing you have a specific family of that religion in mind when you say this?
From my own experience, there are those in every religion that spoil their children. I've also seen parents who give in to their children when in public--to avoid a larger scene, but let me tell you the crap hits the fan when they get home!
In today's society there are many people saying we need to do something about our unruly children, but there are even more saying that the punishments our parents and grandparents used are abusive, illegal and morally and ethically wrong. Parents aren't allowed to be parents anymore, no matter what their religion is.
