Talk to other people you know, see if they use an agent. Decide first, if you want to use an online agent (not sites like Expedia and Orbitz, these are definitely not travel agents) or if you want to go to a local agent. If you want a local agent, that will probably limit your options down, to maybe one or two. If you want to go online, you have a lot more choices.
I would suggest using an agent that specializes in the travel you plan to do most. I think, just from getting a quote from an agent, you will be able to tell how much they can help you. The more detailed they answer your questions, the more helpful they are going to be for you during the planning.
