I believe it helps them make difficult decisions such as when to have sex, whether or not to do drugs and how much "following the crowd" is acceptable. Also if they have religion there is another comfort zone for them. If they can't talk to mom they can still talk to God.

It gives them a solid foundation from which to build a beautiful life. It gives them roots, and something to hang on to when required to fly.
