It is possible, depending on the unit your attached to and your duty assignment.

If you don't want to fight or go overseas on deployments, then don't join.
In order, active duty military are the most likely to go. Reserves are used to supplement the active duty forces in time of war or emergency. The National Guard is the last to be called up and, at least by design, it has to be a major war and/or emergency before the National Guard gets called on (the National Guard technically belong to their state and their primary job is to respond to disasters and other crises within their own state).
As Black Fedora mentioned, the US has been reaping the benefit of the 'peace dividend' for over 10 years (through both Bush Sr and Clinton's terms - it hasn't just been Democrats gutting the military - the military actually grew during Reagan's years). The active duty is no longer large enough to conduct wars like Iraq while still meeting other commitments in the rest of the world (Afghanistan, for instance). You can almost be sure the Reserves will be called up for every war, large or small. In fact, the National Guard has also been relied on very heavily in Iraq. With a smaller active duty military, even the National Guard has had to pick up additional loads.

sure and a few million/4 of what's deployed for the army is shield or Reserve. It became greater yet has long previous down some the previous year on account that some further brigades have come on line now to boot as an strengthen in manning and the ubiquitous use of stop loss alongside with them getting 3,six hundred Air tension workers and six,000 army workers quickly assigned to the army to apply for 2009-2010.

It depends on what you score on the ASVAB! If you score well in a area, they will show you the ropes in that area. For example your scores are high in science area, lets say nuclear physics. They will train you to operate nuke powered subs or something. But its hard to say, ARMY is different than the NAVY. Marines most likely will go fight overseas, but dont just avoid the infantry stuff, thats when you fight. There are lots of benefits when you go over seas. Not sure what they offer but go find out at the recruitment office.

Yes. Since the massive draw down in troop strength by the Clinton and Carter Administration, and to a lesser extent the Democratic congress of the Reagan years, reserve units play a much larger role in overseas deployments than they should or were originally designed to provide.

Unfortunately, yes you will and most likely go before the Active duty guys and possibly do more tours. If you are in a situation that it seems the military is your only answer talk to other servicemen, not all branches are being deployed for a year. I know it is still deploying but 4-6 months is better than a year.

Reserves are no different than regular army. They just have more opportunities for civilian life while still serving for the same pay. If you sign up you go where you are ordered when you are ordered no questions asked just like if you were a regular soldier.

If you get orders Yes you will go over seas. Because when you join the military you are taking a vow to protect and serve your country and Flag against all enemies. I hear it is a great life experience though from those who have been deployed.

you are apt to do whatever the government tells you to do until your time is up. That may or may not include going overseas but probably will. That's what the Army DOES!!!

The Reserves are not first to go, but you may be called if you are needed. It depends on what you specialize in.
