I have read many books that really think so, but it is not always accurate. There are some reasons behind the speculation, though. 99.9% of orange cats are male, and male cats are generally laid back, so orange ones are often like that. White cats frequently carry a deaf or blind gene, which can cause them to be unfriendly. In my experience, black cats tend to be a little aggressive and good hunters, particularly females. As for greys, all the ones I have known were males and pretty docile.
So don't bet on anything, but you will notice patterns!

i would have to agree with the first answer. the color doesnt have to do with anything except the cat's genetic makeup. the color is in their DNA (which was passed from the parents).

i have a cat who is gray. many people think that gray is a sad/boring color, but my cat is extremely active and is easy to get along with.

this relates to humans too: human hair color does not say anything about the person's personality. it's just how they are. :)

I agree with Nina in that it is the genetics that count the most.

Also, I read somewhere that the colors can be influenced by the chemical state of the mother cat's womb. I can't get into the specifics of which chemical states, but I would liken it to (as an offbeat example) how the chemical state of the human womb (alkaline or acidic) can influence which gender of sperm survives the longest in the womb.

I think so from owning a few cats-
My Grey/White cats are both very mean and skiddish they hiss at everything-
I had 2 black white cats and they were both laid back and lazy
My orange/white cat is very loving......

Does your hair color say anything about your personality? hardly......its how you groom it. in actuality it is there eyes that say something about them.
