ggiimm... is sort of correct. There are many degree levels (Bachelor, Master, Doctor are the most common). A physician usually has a bachelor in a scientific field and a Doctor of Medicine (MD). However, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine also call themselves physicians.
And there really arent any Doctors of French. Most non-professional degrees are Doctor of Philisophy (PhD) or Doctor of Science (DSc).

Yes, as some1's pointed out, doctor is more like an addressal, for a dotorate and a PRACTICING physician (just like mister or miss or missus). A physician is one who sees patients, diagnoses and prescribes medication and advises. But, many times these roles r also played by surgeons, so they too may be addressed as DOCTORS. It is inappropriate to address dentists and physiotherapists as doctors. Thus, summarizing, doctor is a designation and physician refers to a role/profession.

Although they can be the same thing, a physician practices medicine and can specialize in the medical field. A doctor may be a person that has earned a PHD in a field - economics, english, psychlogy, etc..

A physician is a doctor who works with patients. Some doctors just do lab work and research, they are not physicians because they don't work directly with patients.

A physician is a specific type of doctor. You have internal specialists, surgeons, dermatologists, proctologists, etc. A physician is just one sub-specialty.
I'm not sure what they do, though. I have an HMO and have to see a Shaman. Oh, that reminds me, I need to dance again to ward off cholesterol.

A physician is a medical doctor.
Lots of other professions can be referred to as "doctor" - dentists, chiropractors, podiatrists, veterinarians, etc.
Also, anyone with a PhD is a doctor within the context of their area of study.
