I was taking a quiz on http://www.onlinechildsafety.net and one of the questions surprised me. It was to the effect that you should not even give information like what your favorite movie theatre is to strangers online. How cautious is that?

I have done a ton of research on this subject as it is part of my job.

The reason you should not give personal information, including your favorite theatre to a stranger is you never know who might show up and try to hurt you.

Keep looking at www.onlinechildsafety.net and also check www.ftc.gov. Lots of great information.

Never give out any information online that could help a stalker pinpoint where you live and what your personal habits are, or those of anyone in your family - especially your children. The more someone like that knows about you, the easier it would be for that person to know how to find you or your family at any point in your day, or to convince your children to trust them and go off with them.

That might be a little much
If that was true then Yahoo answers would be a ghost town
But giving out personal information such as passwords or ss numbers or credit card information is dangerous.
Unless of course youd like to have your identity stolen.

Many, MANY sites exaggerate the power of online predators. Be wary when distributing information, but no predator can learn what neither you nor your friends have said on the internet. Things like age, email address, name, etc... tend to be quite harmless besides the fact they can spark predator's interests. However, exact locations, descriptions of how you look, and places you enjoy visiting are HUGE no-no's. To tell a predator who you are, and your personality is one thing, to tell them where you are, what you like to do, and when you do it is a whole other ballpark.

I never give any kind of info that would even be a clue as to where i am. I usually don't even give what part of the country I am from.

Very cautious! It would be easy for someone who is paying attention to you to figure out what you look like and if you tell them where you like to go, they could start staking it out and do harm to you when you are found. So, don't tell them anything about yourself: hair color, city and state, height, weight, car, places you like to go, etc.

i agree to an extent opinions aren't that big of a deal but if you are chating long term with someone you don't know be very careful you would be surprised at what info they use to find you.
