It's not only OK, it's important.

The death of a pet can be more devastating that the loss of a human.

Don't bury your grief. Let it out. Mourn when you need to. You'll be much happier in the long run.

In the meantime, so sorry to hear about your dog. Both my parents have died-- but when my dog died last year, it was the hardest, deepest loss I've ever experienced.

Absolutely! Pets are part of the family these days, so it's perfectly understandable. Wanna hear a whack story? I was the manager of an animal shelter a few years ago. My dog was really sick and he was going to be put to sleep at my home. I asked if I could have the day off to be with him, and they said no! A damn animal shelter said no!!! So I had to be around dogs all day while my dog was at home dying. Isn't that sad? It still makes me mad today!

I would use a sick or personal day, and maybe not tell your boss why, unless you're friendly, and you think s/he will understand. I'm sorry if your dog died - I know how it feels. Hope you feel better soon!

I think it depends on how you feel. I know that if my dog died I would be in no mental condition to work. I would be a mess. I am sure any employer would rather have an employee that works with their mind on the job instead of crying or feeling down about personal issues. I would take the day off for sure.

If my dog died I would have to take at least a day off because I would not be in any condition to work. Some people just have dogs and some people's dogs are a part of the family. My dog is the baby. I would be too distraught to work the day after she died. If your dog is like this to you, then I believe you need to day off because you are "sick" at heart. Truly.

I do NOT think it is ok. But then again, I have this "phobia" with dogs and cats. Don't know why - I just can't stand the thought of touching dogs and cats. I will pet a horse, cow, deer or bird but I will NOT touch a dog or cat! and I do not think it is ok to take off work over the death of any animal.

I have done it. That is just as bad as losing a member of your family. I was extremely upset and way too saddened and emotional over the loss that I wouldn't have been the least bit productive at work anyways. My dog had gotten hit by a car in the morning, so the loss was sudden. I just couldn't pull myself together enough to make it through a day at work. It was all I could do to be at home and cleaning up all of his toys and stuff.

I would cause you are hurting and can't concentrate on work which is not good for you or the business. I know when my Doberman of 11 years died I had a hard time for months as she was my best friend and 14 years later I sometimes think I can still hear her bark. Sorry for your lose!

The loss of a pet is very tragic. They become a member of the family and it can be so painful that it would be better you call off work than try and go there when your heart and mind aren't into it. Hopefully, your place of employment could understand that. So sorry for your loss! I know how it feels.....

You could I guess but I don't recommend it. It paints a bad picture of you to upper eschelon. Also, why would you want to sit around the house all day thinking about it? It happened to me several times and I went in each time. It made it easier to deal with. I did explain to my boss that the dog had died and I might need a little time to go to the ladies room and have a bit of a cry. She appreciated my coming in and was very understanding.

Hi I'm Garry..
Look if you feel sad and down then you are in no state to work..

Try not to let it get you down..
What goes but must come down so if you are alive no doubt there will come the day you die..

I feel for you and advice you to try to take your mind off the sadness by talking to a friend, maybe over the phone, reading, watching a movie or as you are doing right now using yahoo answers..

I deeply feel for you.

Simply wishing you the best of luck,

Garry

P.S
Feel free to message me if you need someone to talk to re; this subject or any-other.

Peace
