: To open an EPS file, you need to have illustration software such as Adobe Illustrator.
Note, however, that you do not need to OPEN an EPS file in order to USE the EPS file. In most situations, what you should do with an EPS file is IMPORT the EPS file into a word-processing application such as Microsoft Word or into a page-layout application such as Adobe PageMaker or QuarkXPress.
For example, here is how you import an EPS file into Microsoft Word 2000:
Click on "Insert" at the top of the Microsoft Word window.
Then click on "Picture."
Then click on "From File." You'll get the "Insert Picture" dialog box.
Choose "Encapsulated PostScript (*.eps)" for "Files of type."
Navigate to the directory that contains the EPS file, and double-click on the filename of the EPS file that you want to import. Microsoft Word will display a box containing some text that is worded something like this:
Title: MYBRM.EPS
Creator: CSI
Preview: This EPS picture was not saved
with a preview included in it.
Comment: This EPS picture will print to a
PostScript printer, but not to other
types of printers.

Powerpoint works if you do the "Insert Picture", navigate to file directory, and "Insert". Word didn't work for me for some reason. So that's a modification of the current, best answer above. Running Office 2014.

It depends whether the file is an image or text.
Irfanview may be able to open it http://www.irfanview.com
If it contains text, try ghostscript http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/ ... read all the instructions carefully for this program. Installation is not as automatic as many other programs.
If you have Microsoft Word or Open Office, you may be able to insert it into a page and view or print it that way.

Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) is a standard file format for importing and exporting PostScript files. It is usually a single page PostScript program that describes an illustration or entire page. The purpose of an EPS file is to be included in other pages. Sometimes EPS files are called EPSF files. EPSF simply stands for Encapsulated PostScript Format.
An EPS file can contain any combination of text, graphics and images. Since it is actually a PostScript file, it is the most versatile file format that is available. To avoid the need for a PostScript interpreter, EPS-files usually contain a small preview image that is used to visualize its content.
EPS files can be generated by all drawing applications as well as most layout applications. Image manipulation programs like Adobe PhotoShop can also save bitmap images as EPS-files. Some printer drivers are also capable of generating EPS-files as well as PostScript files.
