Could this guy be loosing interest in me or is just too busy? It used to be he would come on everyday to see me. Should I ask him or would I seem too smothering?

Age isn't generally an issue, particularly as it's not a sexual relationship. Get him to ask his mom how she feels, best to know and never hide things from your parents. But a long-distance relationship is very hard to do, bear that in mind. BUT I think the biggest issue here is meeting someone from online. Generally people are genuine, but sometimes people online may not be quite so honest. So please take care of yourself, meet them in an open public place like a mall or cafe, and take a parent or a friend with you.

maybe the excitement of internet dating has worn off a bit for him. Ask him why he has not been on line so much. Could be he is just busy. don't be afraid to ask. I don't think a simle question would be considered smothering

Comment that he doesn't come on as much as he used to and see what he says. He will never tell you outright that he is losing interest, but you can tell him that you enjoy your chats and would like it if he could chat more; you can show an interest in his life without being smothering.
It is quite likely that he is losing interest, I'm afraid.

You can't lead to any conclusion unless you are aware of the circumstances surrounding him. So,better ask him in a bit "understanding" tone.After that decide whether his explanation is believable or not. Since you know him for a long time i hope you will be able to judge him correctly after this.

He has a life outside of the internet, you need to give him space ask him if he's been busy etc. He may be busy at work etc.

he probably lost interest.. leave it along and let him contact you. maybe he will start to wonder the same thing if he hasn't lost interest
