Pay your bills on time and pay a little bit more than the minimum.
Look over your credit file thoroughly. Dispute what you feel is in error and remove things past 7 years.
Don't try to get new credit too many times. This counts against you.
If you have too many credit cards, pay off a few and shut them down. This will hurt your score, but only temporarily. Having too many lines of credit is worse.
Take a look at your debt-to-income ratio. If you have too much debt compared to too little income, this will hurt you. Pay off as many as you can, as soon as you can to improve your score.
Talk with your creditors. Often they will agree to take derogatory things off if you have paid well and on time for a while. Then write the bureaus, (there are 4 now: Innovis, TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax), and tell them to remove these things once the creditor agrees.

The fastest way would be to take out a few secured credit cards, because anyone can get them because the lenders really face no risk because you have to pay them money before they will let you charge anything. This will help your score (if you pay on time, etc.) because they are reported to the credit agencies as regular credit cards.

Why is everybody looking for a silver bullet?
Pay your bills.
Pay them on time.
When you can't pay, call your creditor to make payment arrangements.
Watch your actions, they become habit.
Watch your habits, they become character.
Watch your character, it becomes destiny.
