This is in clear violation of not only logic, but physics. Are people really that clueless?

These answers are all contradictory - if the objective is to raise the body temperature to encourage sweating, and drinking a cold drink causes your body temperature to go up to digest it, then why wouldn't you drink cold drinks? So far I think the magical properties answer is the best!

And....if warming the body & opening the pores, etc makes you feel cooler, why would you drink it in cold weather to get warm?

It is because tea makes you sweat which supposedly cools you down.
I am English and not stupid thank you very much and drink tea from autumn - spring and water in the summer.
It does warm you up and I have tried tea on a hot day and it does eventually work, but you have 20 yucky minutes to deal with first.

I emigrated to Britain more than 5 years ago. I love tea and in my experience the British believe that it cures all sorts of discomforts: heat, cold, thirst, tiredness... my mum even recommends it as a cure for shock.
Its not madness; its just a comforting tradition. The routine of making, sitting down and drinking a cup of tea helps to calm the nerves. The hot drink warms you up if you are cold and taking a break allows you to at least mentally cool down if you are hot.
Speaking of which I'd better go put the kettle on....

Drinking hot water based liquid can help people to feel cool for a number of reasons - one, through improved hydration - tea, especially black tea is mostly water. Also, it can make the body feel warm, which makes the pores dilate to cool off, which results in the body feeling cooler. Sort of resets the internal thermostat - forcing the body to cool more as a result of feeling overheated! And don't forget, the English also drank, and still drink, iced tea!
Drinking hot liquid in cold weather in order to feel warm needs no explanation.
Try it! lol

Actually.... it's true, to a point.
On a hot day, drinking a beverage that is warm will raise your body temperature and help you deal with the heat.
On a cold or cool day... drinking tea (or coffee) that contains caffeine increases your blood pressure which also increases your body temperature and warms you for a short time. However, it is better to drink a cool beverage on a cool day to lower your body temperature.

Simple. lt just does...
Not everything can be explained using known logic and physics...
ln tropical climes like lndia, tea cools them down, while in winter, there's nothing like a cup of tea to get you feeling nice and warm.
Even on a wam summer's day in England, there's nothing quite like that hot cuppa!

No you are cluless teabag-brain. First you imagine the english all saying they drink tea on a hot day because it makes them cool, then you argue with your own imagination! Most english people drink tea because they like the taste.

Apparently it's cause ur body has to warm up to digest somethin cold, so if you drink or eat somethin warm then your body doesn't have to. I agree with you, it's stupid, but that's what I heard too. Stupid people. And I don't drink tea or coffee or anything warm, they suck.

Because it bleeding well does. Tea is drunk in many hot countries. As I understand it it warms the core of the body leading to cooling of the skin.

I certainly don't drink tea in America. That Lipton's tea over there is like bloody dishwater. You yanks just haven't got the knack when it comes to tea making. Leave it to us (and the Chinese and Indians - the real experts). Your coffee isn't much to write home about either. Leave that to the Latin Americans. Their coffee is top-notch.
