Merlot, burgundy, etc - what's best? Not a big red wine drinker so don't have a clue what would be best.

You can make it with either red or white wine but the traditional Sangria is red wine. Just choose something cheap and tasty - yes, they do exist. Merlot would be a good choice, Burgundy might get too expensive to be worth it but if you find a good deal on it, by all means try it. Avoid Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as they're too heavy. Zinfandel or Shiraz/Syrah probably wouldn't work either because they tend to be spicy. You want a wine that's fruity and light which makes Merlot perfect. Alternatively, Beaujolais, Gamay Noir and possibly a Baco Noir would work as well.

an ordinary red table wine is good enough, there's no point using an expensive wine because the taste is masked with the brandy, gin, vermouth, citrus etc
